Evan Almighty?
During my drive to our 11am worship service yesterday I spotted four airplanes flying overhead, each towing large banners advertising next week's release of Evan Almighty, the sequel to 2003's Bruce Almighty. I found that surprising. I've never seen a film advertised by plane before. However, I wasn't surprised to see such advertising on a Sunday, given that Evan Almighty is being aggressively marketed towards Christian audiences. Because the film deals with some biblical themes and because Christians have proved they can make a major dent in box office sales for the appropriately geared film (ie., Passion of the Christ), Hollywood is hoping Christian moviegoers will play a significant role in making Evan Almighty a success (perhaps you spotted the large, cover advertisement given to Evan Almighty in this month's issue of Christianity Today). My question to you is, are you going to see the film? Because this film deals with some biblical themes, and/or because it looks like an interesting and funny flick, and/or because they want to engage culture, many Christians will go and see this movie. On the other hand, because this film mocks some biblical themes, many Christians will choose to not view this movie (see one such Christian's thoughts here). What are you going to do? Why?
