7 Best Books on Preaching

1. Graeme Goldsworthy's Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture. Hands down, this is, for me, the best single book on the ultimate goal of preaching: proclaiming the gospel of Christ.
2. John Stott's Between Two Worlds. This is the first book I ever read on preaching. I read it while on a backpacking trip near Mammoth, CA during my senior year of college. What is exceptional about this book is how Stott articulates the glory and privilege of being called to the preaching task and how he outlines, with great detail, how preaching is to engage one's audience.3. Bryan Chapell's Christ-Centered Preaching. This book is immensely equipping. Chapell, like Goldsworthy, hammers home the need to preach redemptively. Yet Chapell also provides a great deal of practical teaching on how to construe illustrations, make applications, and come up with helpful introductions and conclusions that make for a better sermon.4. Haddon Robinson, Biblical Preaching. This is one of the better books out there on the mechanics of preaching (coming up with an exegetical big idea, a sermon big idea, a sermon form/outline, etc.). There's much to be gleaned from Robinson's great book. What's missing here, however, is any discussion about having a redemptive/gospel/Christ-centered approach to preaching. Nevertheless, this book has helped me much and it deserves the #4 spot on this list.5. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Lectures to My Students. Spurgeon's classic (originally delivered as addresses to the students at his Pastor's College in the 19th century) is not a text devoted exclusively to preaching, but there's a goldmine of preaching wisdom here. I want to re-read this book soon.6. Robinson & Larson, The Art & Craft of Biblical Preaching. I don't have this book in front of me right now, but if I remember correctly it comes to something like 700 pages. The book is a compilation of hundreds of mini-essays on preaching by a variety of preachers. There is some chaff in these pages, but mostly one finds great deal of wheat to be digested.7. John Piper, The Supremacy of God in Preaching. Here Piper reflects on what Jonathan Edwards has to teach us about preaching. To be expected, Edwards and Piper have much to teach us about how true preaching magnifies the glory of God.If you are not a preacher, I'd encourage you to consider reading one of these books on preaching. Why? Here's 3 reasons:1. It will help you better appreciate why God has chosen to feed his church and magnify his name through the communication medium we call preaching.2. It will help you better understand, appreciate, and pray for what your pastors/preachers do for you and your church.3. It will be a nice departure from your normal course of reading. If you are a preacher, what other books would you add to this list?
